Fairchild builds a planar integrated circuit

1960

Fairchild fabricates a working planar integrated circuit, combining components on a silicon chip. Jack Kilby had demonstrated an earlier integrated circuit at Texas Instruments in 1958.

Planar manufacturing helps turn integrated circuits into scalable products. Increasing chip density connects this work to microprocessors and modern computing.
