Hoerni invents the planar silicon manufacturing process

1959

Hoerni develops a process that leaves a protective silicon-dioxide layer over a transistor’s sensitive junctions.

Improved reliability and a manufacturable surface help make silicon integrated circuits possible. Fairchild’s working planar integrated circuit follows in 1960.
